Are you looking for a new Houston CPA?
We are all looking for that right Houston CPA partnership. Always keeping an eye out for that great relationship. We are all open to any great relationship opportunity that comes our way. As you know, there are some good ones, some bad ones and some in between. And, the interesting thing is that one CPA could be great for one business and a real loser for another. We all have our different measurements as far as the actual value of a CPA and how it can produce the wealth building results we are looking for as quickly as possible.
So, the question is… what mistakes should you avoid when choosing a CPA?
Mistake #1: Shopping Price, not Value
This is where hiring a cheap CPA can cause problems. When you invest in something as important as the financial health of your company, make sure you think about value, not just price.
The best investment is the CPA who provides a lot of value at a good price. A good price isn’t necessarily low or high, it’s comparative to the value. When business owners only look at the price tag, they can easily end up wasting money on a CPA who doesn’t offer the most important high-value services. Missed opportunities and a lack of proactive guidance make that a very poor investment.
Mistake #2: Lack of Tax Planning
If you’re not taking a proactive approach to your tax planning, you’re paying too much. That’s why hiring a CPA who doesn’t help you plan for your tax future (or isn’t equipped to do so) is a big mistake.
For many businesses, tax is one of their biggest expenses. Reducing your tax burden is a big priority if you want to free up your money to grow your business or just want more profits left at the end of each month.
There is no one-size-fits-all tax plan. What works for someone else may be a disaster for you. It depends on your revenue, how your business is structured, how many employees you have, and several other factors. A CPA who has experience in your industry is a good starting point, but it comes down to discussing the details and taking an in-depth look at your unique business to find the best opportunities.
Mistake #3: Getting Distracted by Clever Marketing
Flashy marketing and catchy slogans are great for getting attention, but do they really help you choose the right CPA? Unfortunately, no. Many business owners get overwhelmed with choices and end up hiring the firm with the best marketing. Of course, being great at marketing doesn’t make you a great accountant or business advisor.
Just be forewarned that this is a common mistake and follow the advice in this guide to make a more informed and balanced decision.
Mistake #4: Hiring an Outdated CPA
Although accounting most principles have been the same for hundreds of years, the application changes all the time. What’s new in your industry, tools, and technology to help you run your business, tax law changes, etc. mean that a CPA who isn’t staying up-to-date is at a huge disadvantage. And if you hire that outdated CPA, the disadvantage becomes yours.
Make sure you work with a Houston CPA who makes continuing education a regular part of his or her business. Not just the minimum CPE credits required for their license, but proactive training and education to stay on top of trends and changes in the industry.
Mistake #5: Clashing with Your CPA
Even a great Houston CPA will be a nightmare to work with if you just don’t get along. Although it’s hard to measure, personality clashes can make your relationship with your CPA strained. That can compromise communication or cause you to interact less than you should.
You can avoid this by having a simple conversation with your CPA before you retain them. Make sure your values and personalities are aligned well enough to have a good working relationship.
Mistake #6: Choosing a CPA Who’s Out of Reach
This final mistake can often sneak up on you if you’re not careful. Running a successful business requires decision making and thinking on your feet. When you need input or help from your CPA, you need them to be available. A CPA you can’t reach or who doesn’t quickly respond to your communication can cost you thousands in missed opportunities and delayed decisions.
Of course, no one is available all the time. Decide when you’ll be doing business and discuss your needs with your CPA. What hours are they available? What do you do if you have a question outside of those hours? Is there an answering service? Is email best? How quickly do they respond to questions?
Everyone’s needs are different. Just make sure your CPA provides what you need and that you’re both on the same page when it comes to communication
